Stephen Small(link is external)(link is external) is Professor of African American Studies and Director of the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues (ISSI)(link is external)(link is external), an organized research unit founded in 1976 as the first institute in the University of California system to focus on race, stratification, and social change. He is an alumnus of ISSI’s signature Graduate Fellows Program(link is external)(link is external), which for more than forty years has provided mentorship and an intellectual home for advanced students, particularly students of color, across a wide range of disciplines. A noted scholar of Black Europe and African American history, Professor Small is the author of 20 Questions and Answers on Black Europe(link is external)(link is external). Born and raised in Liverpool, England, the city with Great Britain’s longest-standing Black population, he has taught at Berkeley since 1995.
